Service Project

Activity:
Brainstorm volunteer service projects or ways that your family can act in thoughtfulness to others.

Then choose one or two to work on together. Don’t forget to follow-through.

Discuss:
Talk about how the projects are thinking of others’ interests, they are a way of serving Jesus, and they demonstrate Jesus to others.

Weekly Devotions: Thoughtfulness

Memory Verse: Nobody should seek his own good, but the good of others. 1 Corinthians 10:24 (NIV)

Definition: Think of others before yourself.

Day 1: Introduction
¤ Review Memory Verse & Definition
¤ Why should we “think of others before yourself”?
¤ In what ways can this happen?

Day 2: Avoid Selfishness
¤ Review Memory Verse & Definition
¤ What is selfishness?
¤ What are two things that should not be in your heart? (See Philippians 2:3a, selfishness and pride)
¤ How do you avoid them? (See Philippians 2:3b, humility, & Philippians 2:2)
¤ How can you be thoughtful? (See Philippians 2:4) Give examples.

Day 3: The Greatest Commands
¤ Review Memory Verse & Definition
¤ Have you ever heard of “The Golden Rule”?
¤ What is it? (See Matthew 7:12) What does it mean?
¤ What did Jesus say were the two most important commandments? (Read Mark 12:29-31, Love God, love people)
¤ Read Mark 12:31 again. How are The Golden Rule and this great commandment the same?
Optional: The story of The Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37)

Day 4: Ways to be Thoughtful
¤ Review Memory Verse & Definition
¤ What are ways we can be thoughtful?
¤ (See Romans 15:1-2, helping the weak: those who don’t have what we have or know what we know)
¤ (See Ephesians 4:29, saying good things, not bad things)
¤ (See Philippians 4:8, being careful of thoughts in your mind)

Day 5: Why be Thoughtful
¤ Review Memory Verse & Definition
¤ Why should we be thoughtful?
¤ (See Colossians 3:17, to serve Jesus)
¤ (See John 14:15, to show that we love Jesus)
¤ (See 1 Corinthians 10:33 (NIrV), so others can be saved or know Jesus)

Memory Review

Daily review is a great way to make sure that the concepts the family is learning are planted deep in the heart. We write memory verses and definitions on index cards, with the verse or definition on one side and the reference or matching word on the other side. We put the cards in a box that we bring out during devotion times to review what we've learned. Catechism or similar questions can be done in the same way. Use this daily review time for any extra Bible things that your family is wanting to learn. Hide the Word deep in your hearts!
